Diabetic Pain

Diabetic Neuropathy Pain Summary

Diabetic neuropathy is a type of neuropathic pain caused by diabetes. It most often affects the feet and lower legs, then the hands, but any nerve can be affected. It results from diabetic microvascular injury to the small blood vessels that supply your nerves.

Usual symptoms are pain, burning, tingling, and numbness. Diabetic neuropathy also covers autonomic nervous system dysfunction including urinary incontinence, GI problems like diarrhea or constipation, or sexual dysfunction. Critically important, diabetic autonomic neuropathy may make it harder for you to be aware that you are hypoglycemic.

Treatment for Diabetic Neuropathy Pain

More important than treatment is prevention. Get your blod sugar under control, and you will slow down, and maybe even reverse, some of your diabetic neuropathy. It's easier said than done, but you must start with glucose control.

There are three treatment options for diabetic neuropathy:
  • Prevention. Worth repeating over and over: Keep your blood sugar under control, and you will have less pain in the future than if your glucose is out of control.
  • Laser. High-power deep tissue laser can be very helpful in treatment of peripheral diabetic neuropathy, the kind that affects your feet and hands. Laser ameliorates the pain, helps nerves heal, and improves microcirculation. Laser is unproven in treating autonomic neuropathy, no studies have been done, and the scientific evidence would be indirect at best.
  • Drugs and over the counter salves: Some of these work for you, some don't. Results vary person to person. Nothing is guaranteed.
