Hip Pain

Hip Pain Summary

Pain in the hip, buttock, and/or groin areas can be due to problems with the hip bones, bursae, muscles and tendons. But it can also be due to non-hip problems such as nerve root sciatica , gynecologic or hernia problems. Common problems include:
  • Arthritis is the most common cause of hip pain. Our hips do a lot of the heavy lifting and swinging in our lifetimes, and the cartilage can wear out. In minor cases, NSAIDs can help. Consider laser therapy among other consdervative measures. Should a hip replacement be necessary, this is major surgery that is generally among the most highly beneficial surgeries.
  • Tendinitis and bursitis are well treated with NSAIDs and laser therapy.
  • Fractures. Usually you know if your hip is fractured, but these must be surgically treated.
  • Gynecologic issues can present as hip pain. Consult a gynecologist.
  • Inguinal hernias, especially in women, can present as hip pain. Consult a general surgeon.
